Suriname's Acai Berry

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

Suriname is a country of South America which is very famous for the production of Acai Palm and Acai Berries. People all over the world have a misconception that Acai berry or the fruit of the Acai palm tree grows only in Brazil but that is not true at all. Suriname lies within the Amazon region and the Acai palm trees grow here abundantly all the year round. Basically Acai Palm is to be seen throughout the Amazon Basin and that is the main reason why people tend to believe that it grows only in Brazil.

The people who live in Suriname knew about the benefits of the Acai fruit and the Acai cabbages for centuries and they have made this fruit a part of their daily lives. People here drink the juice of Acai berries regularly and this fruit has also been made a part of their diet chart. This particular fruit is a natural anti-inflammatory product and works wonders with those suffering from rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. Acai berry is also antibacterial and an antioxidant and contains some of the most important vitamins and essential fatty acids. These are some of the reasons why the berries are regarded as a kind of superfruit.

The inhabitants of Suriname had been aware of these things for a very long time and in their culture they had always been producing natural medicines from this fruit and from the various parts of the Acai tree. Today, the remedies of these natural medications are treasured by the experts and by the scientists as they hold the key to some of the greatest discoveries in medical science. The Acai Berry and the natural cures that are popular throughout Suriname are showing a lot of promise for the future of world health and the discovery of cure-alls.

Acai is a sort of palm tree and this grows throughout the entire Amazon region. The plants produce deep purple or almost black bunches of fruits and these are known as acai berries. Acai berry is one of the most famous cure-for-all fruits and is listed as a super fruit by the scientists and experts for more than one reason. Most people think that the Acai palm tree and thus the Acai berries grow solely in Brazil but this is a very wrong idea. People in Suriname, South America, have been using Acai berries as part of their daily diet for centuries.

Suriname or the Republic of Suriname shares its southern border with Brazil and its northern border with the Atlantic coast. In the tradition and the culture of this particular country Acai berries have played a big role over the years. The residents of the country drink the juice of Acai berry almost every single day and it is a part of their daily habit. Suriname also cultivates these Acai palms for the production of the Acai berries and also for the ‘cabbages’ or the cluster of new leaves. It is from here that these berries or juice produced from these berries are exported all around the world. The berries are also collected from this region to be taken to the various labs of the world where scientists and researchers still try to find out the beneficial ingredients that the berries contain.

In the past when the Dutch had ruled this country they came to know about this miracle fruit called the Acai Berry and took it along with them to the Netherlands and it had become quite popular in many parts of Europe soon enough. Suriname, today, is one of the largest producers of Acai berries and Acai palms.

Oprah says Acai Berry not a fad

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

The acai berry has shot to fame recently, and has done so through the most prestigious of sponsors: Oprah Winfrey.

Oprah’s recommendation of a book — ‘The Perricone Promise’ by Dr. Nicholas Perricone — has meant that the food highlighted as the world’s number 1 super food — yes, it’s the acai berry — has become an essential part of many peoples’ diet. This transition from simple berry harvested in the Brazilian rain forest to national hero has been rapid.

It was not only Oprah and Dr. Perricone who helped the acai berry make this ascension up the ladder of fruit: the New York Times has been on the case, and even family doctors have started to recommend the consumption of the acai berry — or more properly one of the many products made from the acai berry or its extracts — in order to aid fitness and general well being.

The acai berry may have started off as something of a fad within certain health food circles — indeed people had been using acai berry for many years before Oprah brought it to the nation’s attention — has become a well grounded national obsession. If it makes people fitter and more healthy then why not. Good luck to the little acai berry, I say!
