Suriname
Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008Acai is a sort of palm tree and this grows throughout the entire Amazon region. The plants produce deep purple or almost black bunches of fruits and these are known as acai berries. Acai berry is one of the most famous cure-for-all fruits and is listed as a super fruit by the scientists and experts for more than one reason. Most people think that the Acai palm tree and thus the Acai berries grow solely in Brazil but this is a very wrong idea. People in Suriname, South America, have been using Acai berries as part of their daily diet for centuries.
Suriname or the Republic of Suriname shares its southern border with Brazil and its northern border with the Atlantic coast. In the tradition and the culture of this particular country Acai berries have played a big role over the years. The residents of the country drink the juice of Acai berry almost every single day and it is a part of their daily habit. Suriname also cultivates these Acai palms for the production of the Acai berries and also for the ‘cabbages’ or the cluster of new leaves. It is from here that these berries or juice produced from these berries are exported all around the world. The berries are also collected from this region to be taken to the various labs of the world where scientists and researchers still try to find out the beneficial ingredients that the berries contain.
In the past when the Dutch had ruled this country they came to know about this miracle fruit called the Acai Berry and took it along with them to the Netherlands and it had become quite popular in many parts of Europe soon enough. Suriname, today, is one of the largest producers of Acai berries and Acai palms.
